Standing On the Promises

2 Thessalonians 2:13-17

In the 2002 winter Olympics, the Canadian men's team won the gold medal in the speed skating relay. The two strongest competitors were the US team and the team from Canada. The first US skater fell and though it only took a few seconds to recover and begin skating, that miscue put him far behind. The Canadian team won easily, but what was curious was that each of the US men's team skated slower and slower in turn to the point that the team was lapped by the winning team from Canada. Just the knowledge that they were out of competition had a disheartening effect and took away their motivation.

I will occasionally tape a sports event on TV if I cannot be home to watch it. I will usually not fast forward to find out who wins, but if I find out somehow that my team has lost it just take away my interest. If on the other hand, I know my team has won, I am so eager to watch that I will even fast forward through commercials to see the next set of downs or period of hockey.

Weary Warrior!

A Hurting Word...

I love words--and "weary" is a good one! It describes exactly how I feel tonight--and maybe you agree 'cause you're worn out too! Well, let's move, with whatever energy we've got left, to the Well and find out what the Lord has waiting for us there. He knows all about being weary--He's "been there/done that" and He cares, more than we will ever know! His love is awesome, both in biblical accounts and in our own lives--and I'm just about to prove that with this "short" devotional....you know Peggie is tired when she writes "short" devotionals...grin...

A Helping Word...or Two!

Weary warriors fight the world!

...and a hardened, sick world it is. Read the newspaper headlines, watch the evening news, and surf the Web--crime, immorality, perversion--wickedness is everywhere. "Nothing new under the sun" though--it's been that way . . .

Stay Ready

'Stay ready to go, for today may be your last'. Those are words we don't like to hear, but they are true. None of us are guaranteed another day of life on this earth as we know it. It could be an accident that takes your life, or you may have a terminal disease, and the doctor tells you that you don't have long to live, or God may just call you home. Whatever it is that causes you to lose your life, it pays to stay ready to go. We will meet our maker in one form or another - either ready to live with Him eternally, or we'll be spending eternity in hell - bluntly said, but true.

Today, we said our last goodbye's to a cousin. He had been sick for several years. Yet, during all those years . . .

How Can God Expect So Much?

The process of writing a novel is exciting but labour-intensive. When I finished the first draft of my book, I was elated ? for about five seconds. Then it dawned on me how much work was still ahead. The task of editing and revising lay before me like a long uphill climb. I knew I'd need help, so I joined a critique group.

Having my work dissected and evaluated by strangers was daunting, but it has proven to be invaluable. Others see things I missed, pointing out the errors as well as inconsistencies in the story. One of the flaws often noted is switching point of view (POV). This is easy to do when you're writing, because you, as the author, are omniscient ? you're able to see through the eyes of all of your characters at one time. But when you suddenly switch from one to another, it can be a distraction and cause confusion in the reader.

Habakkuk 1:1-4, 2:1-4

In Friday's Times Colonist is a picture of  Stephen Truscott. He was convicted as a 14 yr old boy of the murder of a girl named Lynn Harper, and sentenced to death. His sentence was commuted just before abolition of capital punishment, and he was paroled after serving about ten years. Since then, his case has become a cause for those seeking to overturn wrongful convictions. Reviews of the trial and the evidence seem to point to a false conviction, but 45 years later, he is still waiting to see if he will finally be exonerated.  Forty five years is a long time to live with the label of murderer if you in fact are innocent.

But we know that justice in this life is always an approximate thing. We do our best, at least we hope we have done our best, and we believe that's enough. Sometimes its not enough and the innocent suffer.

And in a nutshell that's what the book of Habakkuk is all about...injustice and where is God when it happens?
