Receive God's Blessings

"'the Lord pours down His blessings. Our land will yield its bountiful crops."
Psalm 85:12 (NLT)

I love fall! The long days of summer are very hot and humid. Suddenly, you notice when you step outside there is a cool gentle breeze blowing in your face. Seemingly overnight the leaves on the trees begin to turn from deep green to a bright gold or tantalizing red. I find myself longing to visit, once again, the high mountainsides where the color is so beautiful it takes your breath.

But, I live in cotton country. The land is flat and crops grow for miles and miles. Farmers say the beans and rice have produced exceptionally well this year yielding many more bushels per acre than ever before.

A Woman Who Learned What Was Needed

How many times this week has someone asked, "How are you?" How many times have you answered, "Fine, but busy." It has become my standard answer these days and sometimes that bothers me.

There's a familiar story in the Bible that many point to when we talk about the hazards of being too busy. It takes place at the height of Jesus? ministry on earth. He was travelling about the country with an entourage ? twelve disciples and a crowd of hangers-on. He often stopped in a place called Bethany, where two sisters opened their home to him and made him welcome. It's in the home of Mary and Martha that this scene occurs.

Looking For A Spiritual Switch

I had to flick that tiny switch on the wall this morning. The one we here in Alberta forget about for a few months, from June to August, if we're lucky - the thermostat ? that wonderful regulator of indoor temperature. We have an automatic kind. I knew it was cold this morning when I heard the furnace rumble about six a.m. I guess this means summer is over.

Midnight for Jeremiah

Jeremiah 32:1-15

June 18, 1940. Winston Churchill stands in the British Parliament to address his country and its government. France had fallen to Hitler and the British expeditionary forces narrowly escaped at Dunkirk. It was the darkest period of World War Two. He gave a famous speech in which he said the Battle of Britain was about to begin and concluded with these words that have gone down in history:

The whole fury and might of the enemy must very soon be turned on us. Hitler knows that he will have to break us in this Island or lose the war. If we can stand up to him, all Europe may be free and the life of the world may move forward into broad, sunlit uplands. But if we fail, then the whole world, including the United States, including all that we have known and cared for, will sink into the abyss of a new Dark Age made more sinister, and perhaps more protracted, by the lights of perverted science. Let us therefore brace ourselves to our duties, and so bear ourselves that, if the British Empire and its Commonwealth last for a thousand years, men will still say, "This was their finest hour."

"I will protect those who trust in my name. When they
call on me, I will answer; I will be with them in trouble. I will
satisfy them with a long life and give them my salvation."
Psalm 91:14-16 (NLT)

Gone are the fierce storms of last evening. All day the meteorologists had been warning us of the impending danger. Outside the air was so humid you could hardly breathe.
