Maria Joao Pires Practices Wrong SongIt snowed at Cybersalt World Headquarters yesterday, for the first time since the middle of January 2024. To celebrate and enjoy, I have changed our front garden LED lights to rotate through Christmassy colours - just because!

Have you ever had the nightmare where you walk across a stage and sit down at a grand piano in front of a huge concert crowd, expecting you to play, and suddenly realize and panic, "I don't know how to play the piano." But then you think that if you start to try it might come to you - and then realize that isn't going to happen and how cooked your goose really is!. Maria Joao Pires, an accomplished pianist, experienced something similar when she showed up to play with an orchestra and heard them start playing a different song than the one she had practiced! Today's video share captures the early moments of what turned out to be an amazing performance.

ice harvestingI received a very interesting letter in the mail this week from the federal government. They contacted me to let me know that I could start to collect my Canada Pension Plan as early as November, when I turn 60. What fun: it was a confirmation that I am in fact getting that much older! I am not 100% sure if I will start collecting it because the longer I wait the more my monthly cheque will be when I do decide to lock in, but as they say in Hollywood, "It's an honour to be nominated!"

Speaking of Grandpas, back in the day my Grandfather was an iceman. He and his brother would cut ice off of the lake in the winter and store it in an icehouse to sell to people for refrigeration in the summer time. Today's video share is a fun reminder of that work he did. However, he was an ice harvester but the people in this video are ice "havesters."  If you watch the video you will probably catch what the difference is!

Pompeii bathouse discoveredMy efforts to get to a zero inbox have bogged down. I've hit some emails that require a bunch of work to clear and so as I handle those my total number has risen. I am at 54 (I was as low as 29 a few weeks ago) so it's not too bad, but perseverance and persistence definitely need to be ordered from the self-discipline menu!

Today's video share is one that interests me not only because of the images in the video, but also because of the backstory of this private bathhouse that was found in Pompeii. As archaeologists were excavating it, they found the skeletons of a woman and a man in the house, the woman clutching a bag of coins and jewelry. They had barricaded themselves into a small room but were killed as the superheated volcanic gas and ash, known as a pyroclastic flow, ripped through the town. It's a sad illustration of how you truly can't take it with you.

Portugieser Tourbillon Retrograde Chronograph One of my New Year's resolutions was to throw out one thing a day and I happy to report that after two weeks, I am on track! I am interested to see if I run out of things to toss before I run out of days in the year to toss them. Between my office cupboard and my little shop under our back deck, I think I am going to be fine.

puzzle makersOur PVR recently packed it in so I took it for a walk today - to the post office. The cable company had already mailed us a new one and they wanted the old one back. So exorcising my house of the pvr also gave me some exercise (on a day so beautiful that none in the rest of wintery Canada wants me to describe!)
