A Little Imagination

What do you imagine? A better job, a better house, more money, perhaps a vacation in the South Pacific? We all let our imagination run away with us from time to time. Some of our greatest inventions and highest achievements are the result of someone's imagination soaring to impossible heights. Some of our greatest failures and basest sins are the result of the same. It all depends on where we allow our imagination to take us.

Being a Christian takes a lot of imagination. The writers of the Bible continually call us to use it. For instance, the Prophet Isaiah encouraged the people of his day to "Lift your eyes and look to the heavens: Who created all these? He who brings out the starry host one by one, and calls them each by name" (Isaiah 40:26).

We all know the story of David and Goliath, and even if we don't know the real story, we have same version of it that most folks do.

David vs. Goliath has become a by-word, symbolic of a one-sided contest pitting a weak protagonist against a vastly superior force.

Maybe so, and there's no point in me trying to rewrite the modern lexicon, but maybe this contest wasn't exactly what everyone seems to think it was. Let's look at it and see for ourselves.

Now don't worry,? I am not going to de-construct David. I just think there is more to this than we think we know.

The Gathering Storm

The chapter opens with a statement that the Philistines had gathered their army at Socoth which is almost directly west of Jerusalem half way to the Mediterranean.  There at a valley called Elath the army . . .

Now I'm not a rocket scientist and have no clue to the inner workings of science--I leave that to my husband, an organic chemistry professor--who can have your brain spinning as he lectures on the enormity of our universe. Then there's our two wild and wacky sons whose brains never stop spinning, as some of their far-out projects will verify! So go ahead and ask the three mad scientists in the family--just don't ask me--I just live here!!

And so...admittedly, I don't know much about TIME - except that there's never enough! And I don't know much about SPACE - except when *I* am "spaced-out" trying to lead my busy, dizzy life. But there's one thing I do know...there's no such thing as time and space with God!

Starting Over

Our ten year-old granddaughter, Mary Kathryn, received a diary for her birthday. It was a gift from her best friend. She seemed so grown-up when she would take time to write down the events of the day.

One day Mary Kathryn mistakenly left her diary out where the other grandchildren were playing. Her young cousin, Brooke, tore out the pages that had been written on. Mary Kathryn's heart was broken when she discovered it later. That diary was very special to her and she was sad to find the pages had been removed.

A few nights later her older sister entered her bedroom and asked what she was doing. Mary Kathryn answered, "Brooke tore out some pages in my diary that I had written on, so I will just start over."

?I just want to go home.? The young woman's voice quavered with frustration, anger and fear. Her companion smiled. ?I am home,? she said. ?Home is inside me.?

The two women were among thousands grounded in a small airport in Newfoundland on September 11, 2001. They were sleeping on pews in a Salvation Army chapel, eating hastily prepared soup and sandwiches and drinking coffee out of disposable cups. Their schedules had been interrupted and for some time they didn't even know why. They had no idea when they would be able to resume their journey. But Jill Briscoe was smiling. She'd noticed the beautiful young woman and had felt the Spirit nudging her to connect with her. But when she tried to get close enough to strike up a conversation . . .
