The Man Who Came By Night

If you have ever been annoyed or rude with a telemarketer, there is a true story you should hear:

In May 2002, Leonardo Diaz, a Colombian hiker, decided to do some serious mountain climbing with friends. Their goal was to reach the summit of the Nevado del Ruiz, a volcano in the Andes.

On the second day of the climb, a major blizzard hit. Diaz lost sight of his friends and became separated from them. Although not initially worried, the novice climber soon began to run out of rations and suffer from the bitter cold. Although he had his cell phone in his backpack, his pre-paid minutes had already expired. With no way to signal for help, Diaz realized he was not going to make it.

Waltrip Almost Did It Again

Anxiety and doubt plague many NASCAR drivers during SPEEDWEEKS.  Lying awake at night they toss and turn wondering what trouble will befall them as the big Daytona 500 approaches.

But Michael Waltrip knew he had a good car for the race.  Winning the first Gatorade Duel Thursday increased his confidence that his #15 NAPA Chevrolet had a shot to win the big one on Sunday.

By Saturday Michael had emerged as a favorite ? again.  The DEI driver liked his chances of winning and he was ready to race his way into Victory Lane on Sunday.  And for the first 160 laps the dream of being a 3-time Daytona
500 winner came closer and closer.  The NAPA chevy was right where he wanted to be ? up front.  It was obvious Waltrip was . . .

What Impression Will You Leave Behind?

We do want people to remember us when we are gone. But, what will they remember?  Have we done our best to be of good character, compassionate to others, living a good life before others,  and raising our children to respect us and others?

We can do all of the above, yet, we might be remembered for the little things we did or didn't do.  Are you one who gossips about others? Do you run red lights, race through traffic, bad mouth the police in front of others? Are you truthful?  Do you say one thing and then do another?  Do you tell 'little white lies' for the truth? Do you pay your bills? Do you keep your promises, or are you the kind that makes a promise, and has no problem in breaking it? Are you a peaceful-type person, or are you angry most of the time?  Is it easy for you to forgive and forget, or do you constantly bring up something that happened in the past?

Perfectly Broken

I once had a friend named Harvey, a great big guy that worked with us in the construction and renovation of houses.   Harvey    was really valued because he was crazy with a sledge hammer. The boss could send him in ahead and set him loose to tear out walls and even floors. He was like one of those people you see on the Extreme Makeover Home Edition shows, totally eager to get in there and shatter the dismal walls of some wretched dwelling. Breaking things in this way is a really good thing, it gets rid of all kinds of deadness from old paint to unseen mould, from the walls that were too close together and doors that wouldn't close. Breaking things like this opened up the way for new construction, new coverings, new life.

Did you ever think about the things that the Bible talks about that were  also broken like this? Things like broken clay jugs in the hands of Gideons men as they attacked a force so much greater than they that night.

Give It Up!

The little girl clutched her play necklace, a fake to be sure, but a favorite.  Her dad, having a planned surprise for his little girl, said, "I have something special for you; open your hand!"  The little girl could hardly do it--and her daddy could not give her the real pearl necklace until she did!

Today marks the beginning of the Lenten season--a time when many people, Catholic and Protestant, "give up" something they enjoy to show their devotion for Christ, to remember His death on the Cross.  It might be chocolate or pasta, pizza or peppermint ice cream, a favorite TV show, or just some fluffy popcorn to go with it--but it's supposed to be something you love!  That's all well and good--but...

Let's dig a little deeper in the denial...down where it REALLY hurts.  Let's give up our angry thoughts, our prideful actions, our petty causes; our controlling ways, our bitter hearts, our biting tongue, our selfish deeds.  The list could go on and on!
