There's a picture that has been circulating on the internet. It shows two rows of big German Shepherd dogs staring at a tiny kitten walking unperturbed between them. Under the picture is the caption ? "yea, though I walk through the valley ?"

I laughed when I first saw that picture. But it's really not a laughing matter. That kitten is putting herself in grave danger but she's oblivious to it. She's sauntering among her natural enemies as though she were out for a stroll in the park.

That picture reminded me of an incident that happened in Papua New Guinea several years ago. I was waiting for my daughter at the bus stop after school. There were a number of other moms and a few dads there, all waiting for their children to arrive. Then I saw a small group of large dogs approaching. I saw a lot of dogs roaming free when we lived in the Yukon, and I saw what those dogs could do, on occasion. It wasn't pretty.

Opportunities In The Master's Hand

Journalist David Hajdu recently told a memorable story about Wynton Marsalis, one of the most easily recognizable jazz musicians in our day and one of the premier jazz trumpeters of all time. One night, Marsalis was playing with a small, little-known combo in a New York basement club. A few songs into their set, he walked to the front of the bandstand and began an unaccompanied solo of the 1930s ballad, "I Don't Stand a Ghost of a Chance with You." Hajdu records that the audience became rapt as Marsalis's trumpet virtually wept in despair, almost gasping at times with the pain in the music.

Stretching the mood taut, Marsalis came to the final phrase, with each note coming slower and slower, with longer and longer pauses between each one: "I'don't'stand?a?ghost?of?a?chance?"

Then someone's cell phone went off.

Truth Always Comes Out

We often face things that we don't want to do, or places we don't want to go. But, our answer often tells lots about who we really are.

If someone asks you to come to church, and you say, "I?ll be there next Sunday", can you be trusted to be there, or do you often break your word? If you are asked to help at church on some project, do you agree to help, but never show up, or come late, hoping the work will be done? Have you promised to meet someone for lunch or perhaps to shop, but, at the last minute, decided you didn't want to go?

Sometimes our answers often reflect what we think a person wants to hear, never realizing that what we say may come back to haunt us. We should never quickly give an answer to the positive, unless we are willing to do what we have promised. When we back down, it makes . . .

Unbind Him and Let Him Go

How is this for a reason to party! In the Saturday, September....whoops I cut the date off, edition of the Victoria Times Colonist, I came across this story:
The Headline on the story reads "Dead Man Walks into His Own Funeral"

After miraculously surviving his own funeral, Dan Squire did what was, in his mind, the most sensible thing: he cracked open the first bottle at his wake.
"He seen (sic) all the liquor and he said, is this for me? I think I should be the one to crack it." His sister Diana Branton recalled.
Mr. Squires, age 49 had shocked his sister out of her skin Thursday morning when he came shuffling up her street in east end Toronto, while the rest of the family were paying their respects to the man they thought was Mr. Squires laid out in a nearby funeral home. His sister had been too upset to attend.
"I sat there on the steps screaming," Mrs. Branton said. " He said, ?Why are you so upset?? I said, 'dane, everyone's at your funeral? "
