Lessons Learned in Mom's Taxi!

Details
Written by: Peggie Bohanon

"Run, Peggie, Run!" may someday be a bestseller when I write it, in retirement years, in a rocking chair with computer attached (visualize that one!). Actually, I am too busy now to even consider it....webmaster of Peggie's Place, editor of Internet for Christians newsletter, administrator of CrossSearch (both Gospelcom Ministries)...and hold on, I'm not done...wife and mom...laundry woman, chef, domestic engineer, whatever-else-you-name-it, AND taxi driver! In between jobs, I try to breathe. But this week was a real humdinger in the "taxi" department, and I just KNEW there had to be a devotional in it somewhere.

So, jump on the "running board" of the taxi (I've just dated myself...i was a little girl then, honest!!) and come along for the ride in Mom's Taxi. You just MIGHT learn something--I did!

Go to the high school to pick up son number one. On the way (in another direction!), pick up flu-bug-son number two's homework. Grab it from the school office, jump back in my car, find a "post-it" note, "Jason's locker would not open." Call Jason who can't REMEMBER his locker combination. Secretary calmly assures me we can . . .

Nesting Near

Some time ago, my middle daughter, Laura, called to ask my advice. She is at an "in- between" place right now. She's been working in the city but feeling restless, feeling that God has something more for her. So she has begun the process to join a mission group for the next year. Hence, her quandary. Should she stay in the city where rents are high and she has to drive some distance to work, or come home for the next few months so she can work here and save some money as the process unfolds?

As a mom I wanted to jump right in and tell her to come home. But I restrained myself. I advised her to keep praying and wait for God to give her peace about the decision. The next morning I read Psalm 84. I e-mailed Laura and typed out verses 3 and 4 because they had struck a cord.

"Even the sparrow has found a home, and the swallow a nest for herself, where she may have her young ? a place near your altar, O Lord Almighty, my King and my God. Blessed are those who dwell in your house; they are ever praising you."

Thoughts Running Wild!

Imagine going around a curve, or up a steep hill, and your car starts sputtering, and the speed begins to lower. It doesn't matter how much you press on the gas, it is not going anywhere. You let off a little, and it feels as though it's going to start running, and perhaps it does pick up speed for a little while, that is, until you come upon that next hill. Then, it drops down to 10 MPH again! You are constantly praying, "Lord, just let me make it up the hill to a place to stop". All the while, you have traffic backing up behind you, and you are sure they are foaming at the mouth!

The last straw is for one to start blowing his horn at you, and you can't get the emergency flasher to work! But, who in their right mind would be going up a hill practically crawling at 10 MPH? Not me, that's for sure! But, this did happen to me this afternoon, and I was going up the hill at that speed, did have the man to blow his horn at me rather annoyed, as though I could do anything with my car!

My thoughts weren't too nice about the guy, that's for sure. They went from that of just being annoyed at him, until it actually made me mad, as he went flying by me, as though I had been doing this . . .

Cautions To a Great Church

One of the most memorable experiences I ever had was in helping to build a small shed. There was nothing impressive about the size of it, just a 10 by 12 shed. It was going to house a generator so we also had to put some concrete footings in and put a concrete floor in it. What made this experience so memorable was that it was done in 35 degree heat and 90% humidity. The thing is, your body can't cool itself down, the sweat won't evaporate fast enough because the humidity is too high, so what does your body do?it produces more sweat. There is nothing like tropical sweat, it just pours out of you like a leaky radiator. Sweat is really a remarkable thing isn't it, most of you have taken great pains to not sweat, here, this morning, and we're happy you did! It's even in our idioms of speech, if something is not a bother to me, I say , ?No sweat, I can do that.? I got to thinking about this as I read a small pamphlet called, 'the Lord's Work in the Lord's Way?, by K.P.Yohannan. In it he said that 'sweat signifies man's effort, sweat is the result of the curse that sin brought?. You remember the words of Genesis 3:19, ??in the sweat of your face you shall eat your bread.? What he meant was that things were going to get harder for all people because of sin. Though work is a good thing, there are . . .

Affirmation in a Time of Suffering

When I was doing the background reading on 1 Peter, I was reminded of the terrible sufferings which the early church endured.
The exact dating of Peter's letters is not clear. It could have been during the time of Nero, or a later time. But it is clear that it was during a time of persecution and suffering.

You remember the Emperor Nero. The legend is he fiddled while Rome burned.
Rome had large slum areas that Nero wanted to rebuild. The rumors were that Nero had ordered the burning of Rome, but the new Christian sect was a convenient target for Nero who charged they were responsible.

People misunderstood the Lord's supper and assumed they consumed real flesh and blood and imagined all sorts of debaucheries connected with it. So they were receptive to believe this horrible little group might set their city on fire.
Christians had legal protection as long as they were assumed to be a Jewish sect, but as the separation with Judaism became clearer, they lost . . .
