Are You Marking Time by Your Stomach?

Details
Written by: Marcia Lee Laycock
Published: 25 May 2005
My husband and I recently had coffee with some old friends. They are old in the sense that we have known them for a long time, but they are also old in age. They admitted they are starting to slow down, just a little. Then they laughed about how time flies by so quickly. ?We seem to mark it by our involvement at church,? they admitted. ?What? It's time for Bible study already? What? It's Sunday again?? They spoke with enthusiasm and energy about that involvement and about their relationship to their God.

Their comments struck me as something worth noting, since I had just returned from spending a week visiting a retirement home, among people who seemed to be marking time by their stomachs. ?Isn't it time for lunch yet? When will they announce Supper? They should be announcing supper soon.? (They reminded me a little of Merry and Pipin in the Lord of the Rings ? 'surely he knows about elevensies?!?). Though I recognized that the capacity of the folks in that retirement home to be productive is now limited by age and infirmities, it saddened me that there was nothing more significant in their lives than what and when they would eat that day.

Sadly, though many of us are limited by neither old age nor infirmity, we sometimes . . .

Confessions of a Chocoholic

Details
Written by: Peggie Bohanon
Published: 24 May 2005
I am a chocoholic. I know it, my friends know it, now YOU know it--and Choco Anonymous should be very happy with my complete confession. I've taken the first step on the road to recovery! OK, if you REALLY know me, you know I don't give up my chocolate THAT easy--and that somewhere, amidst the drippings and delight of my hilarious habit, there would be a devotional. There is!

Blame it on three friends, who last week sent me three chocolate links...one link daring to tell me how to stop my cravings, and another link delighting to say it was good medicine for my health!
The third friend just decided to send me the BROWNIE link--what a friend!

Now let's get real about my chocolate habit....and let's chart the progression!

I LIKE IT! - Just a thought-nudger, ?cause a friend, a TV commercial, a magazine ad or whatever brought it to my attention. Piece of cake (chocolate!). I can shrug it off and move on....or can I?

The Third Watch

Details
Written by: Rev. Spence Laycock
Published: 23 May 2005

If you've ever worked shift work in a job that goes twenty four hours a day, then you've probably worked the Third Watch. This is the third shift of the day, the four to midnight shift that wraps up all the details of the previous hours and prepares for the opening of the next day. This is a shift of afternoon heat, twilight and darkness, it ends in darkness. I'd like to suggest to you this morning that we all here are in the Third Watch of Time as we have known it. Think of it this way:

1st Watch ? from Creation to Flood (1600 years)'they looked for rest from the curse (see Genesis 5:29).

2nd Watch ? from Flood to Christ (2400 years)? they looked for rescue by the Messiah (prevalent theme of the entire Old Testament).

3rd Watch ? from Christ to Glory (2005 years?) , we look for reunion in eternity with Christ.
