The Years of the Locust

mtsthelenMt. St. Helen's is rumbling and puffing again, although it seems less likely this week that a big eruption is imminent, than it seemed a couple of weeks ago. I lived a thousand miles to the east when it blew in 1980, but I remember smelling the sulfurous odor one morning and hearing on the local radio that the smell was from the eruption. The photos of it erupting are spectacular. Reading accounts of people who were on the mountain or near it and survived, it was an experience of absolutely overwhelming awe and magnitude. And of course there was enormous destruction. The Toutle river was rerouted. Spirit Lake disappeared and there were many deaths. Also interesting was the more long term after effect. Volcanic ash was distributed for many miles around, and we know that volcanic ash is filled with soil nutrients. Agricultural valleys east of the cascades range became benefactors of the mountain's fury.

A Dance Lesson In The Kitchen

"What's Grandma like, Mom?"

My daughter's question caught at my heart. I hadn't seen my mother since before she suffered a stroke and I was fearful. Had the effects of the debilitation changed her more than just physically? I swallowed my apprehensions and answered the question.

"You?ll love her, girls. She loves you both very much."

I could see my response wasn't quite satisfactory. My daughters needed something more. I watched nine-year-old Katie do a pirouette. Her sister Laura, seven, did an attempt at a tap step. A friend had given us an old pair of shiny black tap shoes and both girls had laid claim to them. I smiled. "Grandma was a dancer, you know."

Two little faces lit up. "She was? Did she . . .

Freedoms

Details
Written by: Barbara Sanders

We live in a land of freedoms. These freedoms are quickly being taken away from us. It started with prayer in the schools, and has escalated. Once the door is open to satan, it's hard to get it closed. People didn't rally behind the Truth and try and keep the prayer in schools. We let one woman, a professed atheist, petition the courts to get it stopped, and she succeeded! There has been a petition by another atheist in California to stop children in public schools saying ?under God? in the Pledge of Allegiance to the American Flag.

Taking out that wording won't stop anyone from believing in God, but it gives another leeway for the devil to work his bad deeds in our lives!

Freedom is no longer a given here in America. Today, a freedom and right; tomorrow, it's gone! We are now seeing the courts pass laws in order to get their hands on our private property. We think we own land, but, if this stays on the books and isn't counteracted by the Congress, then we are doomed to lose anything that . . .

The Glory of the Justice of God

Details
Written by: Rev. Spence Laycock
Published: 24 June 2005
In the Supreme Court building in Geneva , Switzerland , hangs a massive painting by Paul Robert. The painting is entitled, ?Justice Instructing the Judges?. In the foreground are all forms of litigation, individuals against individuals, organization against organization. The striking feature of the painting is the depiction of Justice. Typically represented as being blindfolded and with an upright sword representing impartiality, Roberts has depicted justice with the blindfold off, her gaze looking down, and the sword is pointed downwards to a book on which is written, 'the Word of God.? Perhaps there are fewer more comforting thoughts to those who have been abused, mistreated and persecuted unfairly than the truth that there is a justice that is higher than man's justice, a recompense that arises out of omniscient understanding. God's justice is unavoidable, indisputable and perfect in application. This morning I'd to look at a passage in Scripture that speaks about this attribute of God and describes how it will be exercised. Turn with me to 2 Thessalonians 1: 6-12.

I. The Nature of God's Justice is Both Retributive and Remunerative.

Liberty at the Lamppost

Details

Published: 23 June 2005
Someone is always "declaring their independence" around here--so we celebrate the Fourth of July alot! But one day during spring break, the "Freedom Fighters" and three of their friends surrounded the lamppost in the front yard. One of the "fighters" lost the fight, and ended up taped to the lamppost from ankles to neck. A delightful sight to the tricksters, until one of them informed Mom--and an immediate de-taping took place under her supervision. So much for spring break, and one grateful son, happy to be free at last!

Sweet liberty--whether at the lamppost, the Land of Liberty, or the Cross of Jesus Christ! If you are bound today, in any way, meet me at the Lord's Lamppost--the shining Light of Calvary's Cross--you're free to join me there!!

A Helping Word...or Two!

Free to Love!...Remember Joseph in Bible days? Sold by his jealous brothers, thrown in a pit, chained as slave then prisoner, and finally elevated . . .
