More Rest

Our oldest granddaughter, Faith, came in about 11:00 p.m. from Cheerleading Camp completely exhausted. She was tired, didn't like the camp, and did not think she was enjoying herself at all. From her perspective, at that time of the night, everything was wrong.

Her mother told her to go to bed, get some rest, and she would talk to her about it when she wasn't so tired and could be more rational in her thinking. The next morning Faith woke up refreshed and ready to go again. When we talked to her at noon she was having a wonderful time.

The physical rest had done wonders for her!

Physical rest is important. Our lives are affected, both spiritually and emotionally, by our physical rest.

But, there is another resting place waiting for us in heaven. Our daily rest in the Lord on this earth extends to an eternal rest that Christ is preparing for all who . . .

Our Father

Next Sunday, we will celebrate Father's Day this year. Many of us have lost our father (mine was DADDY) over the years. But, there are still the memories of all the years we had with him. I often think back to the time he had with my two oldest grandchildren. It is sad to know the other grandchildren will never know their great granddaddy. But, we were lucky; our Dad stayed with our Mom and us through all the bad and good years, unlike many Dads today. Many Dads hunt a way out, and leave quickly, either for another woman, or just to get away from the kids.

If your earthly father is alive this year, don't fail to call or go by and see him. This is one of the things you can do, in honoring your father, as the Bible tells us to do. Even if your father has done you wrong over the years, you should still call and wish him a happy Father's Day. You never know what a kind word can do - you might find it could be the path to the return of a relationship, or the path to his salvation.

There is a FATHER who will never leave us. He is there for us, whether we are having problems, or we are happy. He is there whether we are . . .

What a Wonderful Savior

A Sunday School teacher was telling her class how God created everything, including human beings. A young boy in the class seemed especially intent when they told him how Eve was created out of one of Adam's ribs. Later that week his mother noticed him lying down as though he were ill, she asked him what was wrong? He looked up at her and said, ?I have a pain in my side, I think I'm going to have a wife.? Mothers have the wonderful challenge of bringing relief to such dilemmas, of preparing lives for what is to come. G.K. Chesterton offered these words to underline the essential work of motherhood, ?Babies need not to be taught a trade, but to be introduced to a world. How can it be an important career to tell other people's children about mathematics, and a small career to tell one's own children about the universe?...A woman's role is laborious...not because it is minute, but because it is gigantic.? The task of preparation is always under estimated, nor matter the application. In fact the greater the need for preparation the easier it is to underestimate the importance of that work. Let's look at a passage of Scripture this morning that emphasizes this truth in the highest way, turn to 1 Thessalonians 5: 23-28.

Not Even A Shadow

My daughter and I recently started new jobs on the same day. So lately the dinner table conversation at our house has centred around our new experiences. Last night I had something funny to report. To teach me how to repair bent frames, my co-worker manipulated an old pair and put them on. The glasses she picked were very old ? the lenses covered a large portion of her face - and there was much laughter as the others in the office complimented her on her fashion statement. When I finished telling the story, my daughter grinned and said, "You mean they were really old, like Dad's?" I nodded my head in spite of my husband's protests. He just can't seem to understand why we don't think his glasses are the latest thing in chic.

Styles and fashions change quickly these days. What's "in" today may not be a month from now. The change from year to year is often drastic. Looking at photographs taken several years ago will make us burst into laughter. "Look at that hair!" "Look at that jacket!" "Did I really wear that shirt?!" Changes in fashion can be fun, though costly if you are intent on keeping up. Change in general, though, seems to be something we don't like. We prefer that things stay the same, especially those things in our lives that keep us grounded and feeling secure. We are quick to establish routines and work . . .

Carry Me!

"Carry me, Daddy," the little girl begged (or whined!), as her tired, spindly little legs could walk no more. Mom and Dad had no car--their wheels were two-legged ones, and so the young family walked A LOT! And Dad "carried" a lot--I know, because I was that little girl.

I watched my minister dad "carry" lots of people--the sick, the grieving, the lonely, the troubled--with compassion, tenderness, and understanding. I have memories of a godly father, a man of prayer and the Word, giving a lifetime of service to the Lord he loved. Perfect? By no means. Loving? By all means. And so, when I relate to God, my Heavenly Father, I have a role model of an earthly father, who loved, taught, and nurtured me in the ways of the Lord.

You may not--the father you remember may have been abusive, unloving, unjust, unforgiving--he may even have deserted you. That's unforgettable, but not unforgivable! Hard words, but you MUST let God help you face it, forgive it, and then be free to . . .
