Strangely enough, this is all true.
I had heart bypass surgery. For recovery, they have you do an exercise program. So I go to the doctor and he asks if I have been exercising. I reply, "Yes. Religiously."
"How is it going?"
"Well, at first it was kind of tiring doing all that once a week..."
"Once a week?"
"Yeah, you know, religiously. Just like church. Every seven days."

One October, my wife and I spent a vacation on Washington's Olympic Peninsula. We were eager to visit the rain forests near the coast, but we heard that snow slides had made some of the roads impassable. Although apprehensive about the conditions we might run into, we drove on.
Sure enough, we had gone only a short way up the High Rain Forest road when we saw a sign: "Ice 10 miles."
Living a Christian life while at the same time using our brokenness and pain as an excuse to not be closer to our Heavenly Father is another form of hypocrisy and religious performance Jesus wants us to be free off.
