Goodbye Pharoah

Have you ever been on the Universal Studios tour? If you have, then you have seen the secret of how Cecil B. DeMille parted the Red Sea. Have you ever wondered how God did it?
These past couple of weeks watching the effects of hurricane Katrina, you get a bit of an idea of what a strong wind can do with a body of water. Did you know that in hurricanes, most of the fatalities are from drowning? I guess the Egyptian army found that out long before there was Doppler radar.

Up to now, Pharaoh had been in charge.
Moses had been sent to Pharaoh to persuade him to let the Hebrews go. It was up to Pharaoh to give a thumbs up or a thumbs down to the idea.
God told Moses that he would not have to do all the persuading just on his own. God gave him a stick of wood and told him to use that as well.
Sure, face down Pharaoh with a wooden staff. Oh yes, and he had his brother Aaron too.
This was Pharaoh's realm as far as the eye could see and well beyond it.
Pharaoh was the law and . . .

Fear of Failure

Sewing is one of those domestic skills that I was taught when a young girl.  I learned it at the home of friend who convinced me to join a 4H group.  It was a lot of fun getting together with six other giggly girls to try and make items of clothing for ourselves.  When the course was over I thought I would continue to sew, but I soon discovered I had a problem.  I loved material.  Now you'd think that would be an asset for a person who wants to sew, but in my case it worked against me.  You see, I liked the big lengths of material as it came off the bolt - the full stretch of the pattern, the feel of it.  I liked it so much I couldn't bring myself to cut it.  What if I made a mistake?  What if the whole thing was ruined and I had to throw that lovely material away?  I just couldn't do it.  So the material sat - in a box in a closet.  I bought all my clothing ready-made.  Years later when I did decide I wanted to make something, I realized I'd forgotten a lot.  My sewing skills hadn't developed.

Fear of failure often stops us from growing.  We don't go for that promotion . . .

Wonders of Creation - The Ear

Details
Published: 08 September 2005
The shape of our ear is designed to maximize the sounds we hear. If we had no ear, everything would sound sharp and 'metallic?, but God has designed a large, flexible flap, which catches low, medium and high frequency sounds, and also acts as a buffer. These energy waves are channeled down the ear canal and strike the ear drum, which vibrates against three tiny bones. The bones are designed to catch minute vibrations, yet also protect us from dangerous sounds. Each bones is shaped and fitted in a remarkable way, transferring the energy to a snail-like structure, which analyzes the energy it receives and sends appropriate signals to the brain, which in turn identifies these signals and interprets them for our mind. In this way we can discern between a voice, wind, metal, strings and so on.

A sound seldom hits both our ears simultaneously. Our brain gauges the time interval between the sound's reaching one ear and its arrival at the other ? the interaural time delay ? and automatically makes further calculations about the sound's origin. Based on this minute difference in arrival of the . . .

When God Believes - Part 1

When you listened to the reports of the chaos of New Orleans this past week it surely seemed surreal. One person described the city as being like Baghdad when it fell. Another said that it was ?angel wings and God's spit? that held their house together at the height of the storm. Despite the warnings to evacuate, many people believed they could just ride out the storm. One man talked of paddling around his living room on his son's surf board, but then the water rose again and he retreated to the attic, and then it rose some more and he had to smash a hole through the roof and climb onto a nearby tree. He ended up clinging to the limbs of the tree for the next four hours hoping for rescue. Throughout this horrific ordeal, complicated by looting, snipers, sexual assaults and other unrestrained wickedness, there are countless reports of heroism, of courage and of faith. God has His purposes in having this level 4 hurricane hit one of the lowest lying cities in America, a city renowned for it's voodoo, for its? sexual depravity and violence. What is evident this morning is that in times of chaos, in times of tremendous upheaval and danger, God, by faith and through faith, calls people to an obedience to Him that is seen as courage and strength. If we consider this in local terms, that the population of New Orleans is about that of . . .

The Puppy Who Wasn't

Dropping in on a friend unexpectedly is not always a good idea, but some of us live a bit spontaneously and that's just the way it seems to be. I decided to drop in on my friend, Lynn, one day, when she was living in a small apartment above a shop. The location was out of town and isolated enough that the owner, Mike, had bought a watchdog. When I arrived, the dog, called "Puppy," got to his feet and barked. I told him, "Go lie down," and headed for the side door of the building. You see I knew Puppy. He was anything but the cute cuddly little thing his name implied. He was massive and ugly, but he had always been friendly when I had visited on other occasions.

On this occasion, however, I did not know the owner had left the dog on guard. I was a bit surprised when Puppy suddenly appeared at my side just as I reached the door. He didn't growl, just peered at me with doleful yellow eyes. I patted his head and put my hand on the doorknob. Puppy wrapped his vice-like jaws around my wrist, applying just enough pressure to . . .
