Wonders of Creation - Living in Space

Details
Published: 13 October 2005

At present our planet has an orbiting space station, in which people have been living, sometimes continuously for many months.  They have, of course, been tested, to see what the effects of living in micro-gravity are.  Here are some of the results:

Space affects the body in many ways.  One measurable effect is gradual bone loss ? at a rate of 1 to 1.5% every month.  The long term effect of this is similar to osteoporosis, or brittle bones.

Increased risk of kidney stones, which is linked to the slow demineralization of the bones, and also loss of muscle mass.  As the muscles shrink, the general strength and endurance of the body drops, so astronauts may become enfeebled.

Because the heart is not working against normal gravity, it too can become weaker, and suffer from rhythm disturbances.  Because the internal pressures of the body have altered, more fluid is pushed into the head, and less down to the feet and hands.

Because living in space alters the normal circadian cycle, (clearly defined day and night) astronauts can suffer from stress, and loss of sleep, which leads to a lowering of their immunity from infections.

Astronauts also need . . .

Wonders of Creation - Cells

Details
Published: 09 October 2005

The usual school textbook diagram of a human cell and pictures of the Earth from space share something in common ? both make an object of incredible complexity appear simple. Zoom in on either, and a vast range of complicated detail will emerge, however it is easier to understand this detail when it comes to the Earth, than it is with the cell, because cells are made of molecules and atoms, chemicals and proteins and all sorts of other strange things, which we usually never see.

Yet all living things are made from cells. They are the basic building blocks of all life. In the human body they number in the trillions, and all of them communicate with each other like one vast city wired together. At the subatomic level a single cell contains several trillion parts, and all of these parts must work together efficiently, or the cell will either mutate or die. Just as a machine such as a photocopier is made of many separate pieces, all designed to operate with all the other pieces, the human cell is like a machine designed as a whole ? as Hickman (1997 page 43) says, ?Cells are the fabric of life.

Even the most ?primitive? cells are enormously complex structures that form the basis units of all living matter. All tissues and organs are composed of cells. In a human an estimated 60 trillion cells interact, each performing its specialized role in an organized community. In single-celled organisms all the functions of life are performed within the confines of one microscopic package. There is no life without cells.? Bacteria, or germs, are so small we cannot see them without a microscope, yet they need several thousand genes to carry out the functions necessary for life. E. coli has about 4,639,221 nucleotide base pairs, which code for 4,288 genes. Each gene produces an enormously complex protein-making engine. Despite Man's general dislike of bacteria, if just one of them could be enlarged to the size of a football field, it would . . .

Thanksgiving: The Antidote to Pernicious Creeping Materialism

Dr. Erin Beck is well known for his depression scale. It is the questionaire that is given to people suffering from depression.. He published some research on suicide in the American Journal of Psychiatry. Among other factors, he found that your risk of killing yourself rises with your income. A different study says, "subtract two years from your life if your income is over $40,000" That is US, so maybe $50,000 Canadian. With affluence, anxiety goes up, contentment goes down.
Next time you ask for a raise, your boss may say, "No, we can't afford to put your life at risk."
Be forewarned.

There is no glory in poverty, but chasing after money and stuff money buys obviously does not bring happiness either.
John MacArthur of Grace Community Church in California says,

A study of thirty plus denominations points out that although income after taxes and inflation, increased 31% in the last 17 years, giving has gone down 8.5% in the same . . .

The Crossing

Some of the most profound and familiar images in the Bible have to do with water. Noah and the flood of the whole earth, Moses and opening up of the Red Sea, Jesus walking on the water of the Sea of Galilee, water being turned into wine, the pool of Siloam and the healing that Jesus did there, the drying up of the Euphrates river in days yet future, all are miraculous events that have to do with water. So this morning we also look at how God used water to proclaim His present and future sovereignty, when He again overruled the laws of matter and nature to proclaim His glory. As we read Joshua chapter three we?ll examine it in three sections, each section calling us, as it did the Hebrews, to prepare ourselves for what God is about to do.

I. Before You Begin To Step In, Wipe Your Heart Clean. (vs 1-5)

Consider the first five verses ofJoshua 3. The nation of Israel was brought to the edge of the Jordanand there they waited for three days. It was a time of preparation not delay. They were told to do three things, 1. When you see the ark of the covenant being lifted up and carried by the priests, follow it. 2. When you follow it be careful to keep your distance, stay back 3000 feet so that you can see it, for where it leads is where you have never been before 3. Consecrate yourselves for what comes next requires a readied heart. We are about to follow the Word of God here this morning, we are about to move in obedience to what Jesus specifically instructed all His disciples to do as . . .

Wonders of Creation - Ear Coning?

Details
Published: 05 October 2005
Have you ever heard of ?Ear coning?? Here is how it works: you lie down on your side and stick a cone-shaped candle in your ear. Light the candle and, according to the promoters of this crazy idea, the candle will create ?negative pressure? inside your ear, and it will also remove undesirable wax from your ear. This is what ?Coning Works, Arizona? claims anyway, but the truth is, the candles do not produce negative pressure, because they are not hollow and they stick inside the ear, creating a good seal with the skin. Also, they do not remove wax from the ear. They can in fact injure it.

But many people have paid good money for ear coning, because they thought it was really true. The fact that even one person was silly enough to stick a burning candle in his ear demonstrates how gullible humans can be. But some people will believe anything.

The same can be said of people who believe in Darwinian evolution. As a theory it sounds extremely believable ? on the surface. (By ?evolution? we mean the gradual change of one species into another.) It is only when the claims are examined and tested, that the holes in the theory begin to open. As Jeremy Walter (PhD in Mechanical Engineering) wrote, 'science is the human enterprise of seeking to describe accurately and quantitatively the nature and processes of our universe through observation, hypothesis, and experimental validation.? The fact is, evolution has never been observed, and has never been produced in an experiment. There are also plenty of hypothetical suggestions, but none of them has been proved, or been provable. Yet millions . . .
