- photo from Susan PageI fondly remember seeing both the movie and the theatre production of “Fiddler on the Roof.” Sometimes, when I find myself short on cash, I start humming the tune “If I were a Rich Man, Daidle deedle daidle Daidle daidle deedle daidle dumb.” A line from another song that comes to mind is, “If I Had a Million Dollars,” … I’d be rich!”
Thankfully, these moments don’t occur very often because deep within my soul, I realize how wealthy I truly am. Like it says in this chorus resurrected from my camp counselling days, “I’m richer than a millionaire, just because He cares. The riches of my Lord I’ll share, just because He cares!”
Often, during our darkest hours and times of greatest need, we discover rich, spiritual treasure. It’s like mining for secret gems. The taxing search brings great rewards. A Scripture found in Isaiah 45:3 is priceless to me: “I will give you the treasures of darkness and the hoards in secret places, that you may know that it is I, the Lord, the God of Israel, who calls you by your name.” Oh, the richness of the comfort we find in the astounding truth that God knows our name. He knows us as individuals, all our circumstances, all our sins, and yet He loves us as His beloved sons and daughters. Indeed, this is a wealth beyond all comprehension.
The Apostle Paul referred to "the unsearchable riches of Christ" in Ephesians 3:8, and in Romans 2:4, he references "the riches of His kindness and forbearance and patience." In Romans 9:23, there is a reference to "the riches of His glory." "Riches of the wisdom and knowledge of God" are mentioned in Romans 11:33, and "the riches of God's grace" are spoken of in Ephesians 1:7. The "riches of His glorious inheritance" will be revealed one day (Ephesians 1:18).
“Jesus, treasure of life, You are the pearl of great price” is a lyric from yet another chorus. Combining songs and Scripture can certainly affirm the truth of our wealth in Christ Jesus.
Finally, there is a jewel of a verse found in Philippians 4:19, "And my God will supply every need of yours according to His riches in glory in Christ Jesus."
Take a treasured moment and read that verse again … oh, the glory of His riches!
Yes, we are rich indeed … “Daidle deedle daidle Daidle daidle deedle daidle dumb!”
Susan Page is the daughter of the King, His beloved child, wonderfully forgiven and blessed! Susan longs to age gracefully, becoming more like Jesus as she seeks the hidden treasures revealed to her through Scripture, literature, the arts, humankind, and nature.
