chicken thursday August 13Oh look, Chicken Thursday!

If you are subscribed to the Cybersalt Digest only, you may not realize that Chicken Thursday Cybersalt News updates also go to my PearlyGates list. That list features clean, theologically incorrect jokes. And if you are only subscribed to the PearlyGates list; vice-versa!

All this is to explain this special note to PearlyGates subscribers that there hasn't been a mailing for a couple of weeks because I had to redesign the newsletter template after a major upgrade to my newsletter sending system (the Cybersalt Digest got its new template this past Sunday.)

I am really happy with the results and am enjoying having this overdue upgrade off of my to do list. I spend so much time working on other's people's websites that my own sites are often neglected in the same way a mechanic ends up not working on his own car.

Sunday greetings everyone!

Thank you for your feedback and comments about the new Cybersalt Digest newsletter template! Please keep them coming as you have ideas. You may notice a few changes in today's mailing, which include:

  • a darker colour for the titles
  • a nicer divider between the content items
  • adjusted spacing between the content items

Also of note:

  • Today's illustration is being rerun today because I had something set incorrectly and the whole item was not showing.
  • The newsletter is not displaying properly in Microsoft Outlook. I am looking for a fix for this.
  • YouTube videos are handled differently in this updated system. As you will see below, the image for clicking to view a video is much smaller. I may be able to find a way around this, but that may take a while to figure out.

Today's video share features a 93 year-old who still has a great singing voice. It was originally shared with me on FaceBook, but I tracked it down on YouTube so I could include it here.

chicken thursday August 13Oh look, Chicken Thursday!

Remember me, lol?

Two weeks ago there was no Chicken Thursday mailing because of a DOS attack on the server. Last Chicken Thursday something happened to my newsletter software and the Cybersalt email templates went a little wonky. I could have searched for and fixed the problem, but for a long time now there has been a new version of the program available and I decided it was time to update. This meant that I had to redo the Cybersalt Digest template which was, like me, getting old and tired anyways.

After missing last Sunday's mailing, I am happy to present to you a new, responsive, mobile friendly Cybersalt Digest template. There may be some tweaks left to do over the next few weeks, but I think it's a big improvement.

chicken thursday August 13Oh look, Chicken Thursday!

Yesterday was International Dog Day (for dogs it actually felt like International Dog Week.) To mark the occasion, lots of people were posting pictures of their pooches online. I was tempted to post a picture of our dog, but the back corner of our yard is not that photogenic (Maggie has been enjoying a dirt-sleep since 2008.)

Maggie is actually celebrated online everyday in the Funny Dog Pictures area of the Cybersalt Site. You will find that at:
www.cybersalt.org/entertainment/funny-dog-pictures

She was an inspiration for an article I wrote in 2004. You can read, "My Dog Has Fresh Water" at

Sunday greetings everyone!

There was no Chicken Thursday mailing last week because my server was under a DOS attack on Wednesday night. In this case DOS stands for Denial of Service. I know it sounds like something that might happen if a pastor was angry with his church or something a mechanic who had worked on your car might say if you accused him of breaking something he wasn't suppose to work on, but it is really just a bunch of computers flooding another computer with so many requests that the people who want to use it can't. You can read more about DOS attacks at en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Denial-of-service_attack

Anyway, by the time all of that was sorted out, it was late and Grandma Cybersalt and I decided to turn in for the night instead of staying up late and getting the mailing out.

I don't know about you, but "Deciding to turn in for the night" sounds pretty old to me. Maybe we are getting old because today is our 34th wedding anniversary. With that in mind, today's video share is my wedding video. It's a blast from the past and maybe you can figure out why Susan married me - I still can't.

BTW, for those you you who are more into cars than weddings, skip to the end for the 1965 Pontiac Bonneville convertable.

Sunday greetings everyone!

I cannot remember a time when I have been so often speechless at the state of the world, not to mention the sheer selfishness and stupidity of so many people. A few times this past week it all left me feeling exhausted and overwhelmed.

The video I am sharing today helped give me some perspective in the midst of all of that. It reminded me that even though there is so much I cannot do about the world, there is much I am called to be in it and become in it.

chicken thursday August 13Oh look, Chicken Thursday!

I just noticed that today's one liner is number 1500! Back in grade school I hated having to do lines, but apparently over that.

In other news, it was a windy day at Cybersalt World Headquarters yesterday. We're located atop a large hill and when the wind hits it just right, we get to witness some pretty interesting behaviour by some of our local birds. It was fun to see a couple of all black birds having a great time playing as they soared along the edge and then tucked one wing in to do barrel rolls, apparently just for the joy of it.

It's fun to watch but it does also make me feel bad for those times in the past when I've had to eat crow.

Sunday greetings everyone!

Today's video share is a bit of a heavy one and I'm not sure if I have shared it before or not. If I have, please forgive me. The length and risks this reporter went to to get this story really impresses me.

Many of the refugees Cybersalt is assisting have fled Pakistan after be falsely accused of blasphemy just as some of the subjects of this video have been. Watching this both challenges me to be more grateful for the freedom I have in my life and to ask myself what more I can do to help those who have been "banged up for blapsphemy."
