A close-up of a yellow day-lily covered with drops of water.I enjoy picking up random books at second-hand stores when they pique my interest. I have found some treasures.

The latest one - Windows of the Soul by Ken Gire, was quite a find. It’s a book which expounds on the many avenues through which God speaks to us. He speaks through Scripture, prayer, nature, and dreams. He may also speak through the arts. God can reveal Himself through music, theatre, poetry, creative artwork, and storytelling.

There are times when our hearts and spirits may be overwhelmed with emotion when we are exposed to a moment where we see or feel the touch of God. I recall vividly when I experienced one such moment.

One Sunday at church, Compassion Canada featured a video highlighting their child sponsorship program. As I watched, the tears began to fall. The video featured Steven, a young worship leader, who had travelled from the Netherlands to Bolivia to meet his sponsored Compassion child, seven-year-old, Emmanuel. Emmanuel, was asked the question, “What do you like most about going to church?” He responded through the translator with an answer that would touch even the most hardened soul. This vulnerable boy’s response was heartbreaking, “I like that nobody hits me there.” Steven was undone. He took a moment to compose himself, then while gently holding little Emmanuel on his knee, Steven softly sang the song, He Knows My Name.

He Knows My Name

I have a Maker
He formed my heart
Before even time began
My life was in His hands

I have a Father
He calls me His own
He'll never leave me
No matter where I go

He knows my name
He knows my every thought
He sees each tear that falls
And He hears me when I call.

God spoke to my heart through this short little video. It was a window to the soul moment. I have deep empathy and sorrow for all the little children of this world who are suffering. No child should ever have to suffer. Yet, we live in a broken world.

However, one day all the heartache will be redeemed, and all God’s children will be safely home with Jesus because of His sacrifice on the cross.

In the meantime, I am deeply grateful to our Faithful Father because of the truth of the words that were so beautifully penned and set to music. God knows little Emmanuel’s name. He knows your name and He knows mine.

“Before I formed you in the womb, I knew you” (Jeremiah 1:5).
