"And it came to pass, when Ahab saw Elijah, that Ahab said unto him, Art thou he that troubleth Israel?" 1 Kings 18:17
Samaria had experienced a three-year famine, foretold by the prophet Elijah. Now the LORD sent the prophet of King Ahab to bring him the promise of an abundant rain. Instead of rejoicing in the message and praising God for His mercy, Ahab accusingly asked Elijah: "Art thou he that troubleth Israel?"
It is frequently the experience of the believers, and especially of those who teach the Word of God, to be blamed for the world's troubles. They give their lives to the preaching of the Gospel that sinful man may live; and when misfortune comes, they are accused of causing it. It is said that Nero had the city of Rome set on fire, but he blamed the Christians and ordered their persecution. When Jesus preached the Gospel in Judea, some said: "Nay, but He deceiveth the people," Finally their hatred became so intense that they crucified Him. Even today, though the answers to the world's problems are still found in the Word of God, the Christians are often hated, and in more than one country they are persecuted and put to death.
Christian friends, We Christians must expect to be hated. Jesus said: "Ye shall be hated of all men for my name's sake" Matt. 10:22. That is part of the Christians' cross, of which Jesus says: "If any man will come after Me, let him deny himself and take up his cross and follow me" Matt. 16:24. Though we may at times be lamed for the troubles which unbelievers bring on themselves, we re still blessed, for no one can rob us of the "the crown of life, which the LORD has promised to them that love Him." James 1:12. We surely don't want to face people who are hostile to our faith, but when we do we can count on help from the ONE whose name we represent.
In our daily life and service Let us be disciples true; Being meek when others hurt us, LORD, in us may they see You.
THOUGHT FOR THE DAY - Those who live for God can expect trouble in the world.
