Dishonesty Doesn't Pay

A young man in a red checked shirt, hands clasped behind his head looking shocked. One year, at Western, there were these two guys who were taking Chemistry and who did pretty well on all of the quizzes and the midterms and labs, etc., such that going into the final they had a solid A.  These two friends were so confident going into the final that the weekend before finals week (even though the Chem final was on Monday), they decided to go over to Toronto and party with some friends there during the Vanier Cup weekend.

So they did this and had a great time.

However, with their partying and everything, they overslept all day Sunday and didn't make it back to Western until early Monday morning.  Rather than taking the final then, what they did was to find their Professor after the final and explain to him why they missed the final.  They told him that they went up to Toronto for the weekend, and had planned to come back in time to study, but that they had a flat tire on the way back and didn't have a spare and couldn't get help for a long time and so were late getting back to campus.

The Professor thought this over and then agreed that they could make up the final on the following day.  The two guys were elated and relieved.  So, they studied that night and went in the next day at the time that the Prof had told them. He placed them in separate rooms and handed each of them a test booklet and told them to begin.  They looked at the first problem, which was something simple about molarity and solutions and was worth 5 points.

"Cool" they thought, "this is going to be easy."

They did that problem and then turned the page. They were unprepared, however, for what they saw on the next page.

It said:
(95 points) Which tire?

One-Liner #1964

A young man in a striped shirt shrugging with his palms up.I decided to make sure my wife woke up with a big smile on her face this morning; I can't have Sharpies in the house anymore.

Finally, a Safe Space 🚪

From inside a barn, animals, child and wheelbarrow silhouetted against the open door. If, like me, you've ever been accused of being raised in a barn and want to talk about it, remember ...

my door is always open.

One large and several smaller diamonds falling, against a purple background."Everybody wants to be a diamond but very few are willing to get cut."

Lessons from Trees

Looking down a long dirt lane with wide grassy shoulders under the canopy of leafy arching tree branches. It's important to have roots.

In today's complex world, it pays to branch out.

If you really believe in something, don't be afraid to go out on a limb.

Be flexible so you don't break when a harsh wind blows.

Sometimes you have to shed your old bark in order to grow.

If you want to maintain accurate records, keep a log.

It's okay to be a late bloomer.

Avoid people who would like to cut you down.

As you approach the autumn of your life, you will show your true colors. You could be Brilliant!

In other words "bloom where you are planted and make the best of what you've got."

I Wish and I Choose

The front window of a house, with a vine growing all around leaving only the middle of the window clear to look through.I wish I had known …
I was God’s beloved child
I wish I had known …
I did not have to earn His love

I wish I had known …
I was wonderfully made and fully accepted
I wish I had known …
Grace and love were more important than rule-keeping
