The Cybersalt Digest

Cybersalt News

Sunday greetings, everyone!

Rev. Glen Sampson funeralThis September 28th will be 27 years since I started the CyberSalt Digest. Over the years, the digest has led to so many fun, interesting, and blessed interactions with subscribers – and, well, a few not-so-pleasant ones too. One of the most amazing stories happened in January of 2009 when I received the following email:

Hello Tim:

I have subscribed to your Cybersalt digest for a number of years now and it has been a source for many illustrations for my sermons.  I have enjoyed the digest and it has been the source of many smiles and laughs over the years.  Imagine my surprise when I open your issue dated January12, 2009 and see a smiling picture of my son and his fiancé.  We are so very excited about their engagement. And I really appreciate having Alyssa's blog.  It is a pleasure to get to connect with you this way although I have probably had e-mails from you before Matt even met Alyssa.

It is such a small world.

Best regards,

Glen

Landing Check

Alaska Juneau glacier from an airplane.I was inspecting communications facilities in Alaska. Since I had little experience in flying in small planes, I was nervous when we approached a landing strip in a snow-covered area. The pilot descended to just a couple hundred feet, then gunned both engines, climbed, and circled back. While my heart pounded, the passenger beside me seemed calm.

"I wonder why he didn't land," I said.

"He was checking to see if the landing strip was plowed," the man said.

As we made a second approach, I glanced out the window. "It looks plowed to me," I commented.

"No," my seat mate said. "It hasn't been cleared for some time."

"How can you tell?" I asked.

"Because," the man informed me, "I'm the guy who drives the plow."

Quote #2335

Silhouette of a man kneeling beside a misty spot in the early morning sun."While it's impossible to trace the pinball path of a single prayer, our prayers somehow exit our four dimensions of space-time in order to get to the God who exists outside of the four space-time dimensions He created when He said, "Let there be light." Our prayers don't dissipate over time; our prayers accumulate through eternity."

Someone Else's Obituary

Overgrown cemetery with concrete and stone headstones, with flowers and ivy galore. Our church was saddened to learn this week of the death of one of our most valued members, Someone Else.

Someone's passing creates a vacancy that will be difficult to fill. Else has been with us for many years and for every one of those years, Someone did far more than a normal person's share of the work. Whenever there was a job to do, a class to teach, or a meeting to attend, one name was on everyone's list, "Let Someone Else do it."

Whenever leadership was mentioned, this wonderful person was looked to for inspiration as well as results; "Someone Else can work with that group."  It was common knowledge that Someone Else was among the most liberal givers in our church. Whenever there was a financial need, everyone just assumed Someone Else would make up the difference.

Someone Else was a wonderful person; sometimes appearing superhuman. Were the truth known, everybody expected too much of Someone Else. Now Someone Else is gone! We wonder what we are going to do. Someone Else left a wonderful example to follow, but who is going to follow it? Who is going to do the things Someone Else did?

When you are asked to help this year, remember -- we can't depend on Someone Else anymore.

Featured Illustrations are items well suited for illustrating or inspiring a point in a sermon, speech, or devotional. Funny, moving, or perhaps even graphic, the point of them is the point you make with them.

I’m Not Old - Just Young Challenged

old couple argueMost people are fascinated by their age as if it makes any difference in their lives. Some people are very intimidated by getting older and struggle against it.

When I was young, I couldn't wait to get older. I couldn't wait until I was old enough to get a driver's license. Why does it take so long to get old when you're young, and when you're old, it flies by like a bullet?
