Welcome to Week Four: The Power of "Then God Said"

Today I’m continuing through this little book called 52 Bible Verses for Men by Samuel Duth. You can visit his website at samuelduth.com.Week4

Genesis 1:26 says: “Then God said, ‘Let us make mankind in our image, in our likeness, so that they may rule over the fish in the sea and the birds in the sky, over the livestock and all the wild animals, and over all the creatures that move along the ground.’”

Before I get into the heart of this, I want to highlight a phrase that keeps appearing throughout this chapter—the words:

“Then God said.”

The Pattern of Creation

Look at the repeated pattern:

  • Verse 3: “Then God said, ‘Let there be light.’”
  • Verse 6: “Then God said, ‘Let there be an expanse.’”
  • Verse 9: “Then God said, ‘Let the waters be gathered.’”
  • Verse 14: “Then God said, ‘Let there be lights in the heavens.’”
  • Verse 24: “Then God said, ‘Let the earth bring forth living creatures.’”

And then—on the sixth day:

“Then God said, ‘Let us make man in our image.’”

Verse 27 continues:

“In the image of God He created him; male and female He created them.”

These verses are deeply important. We should never rush past them.

Then it continues:

“And God blessed them. And God said to them, ‘Be fruitful and multiply, fill the earth and subdue it…’”

Notice again: “And God said.”

God created everything not with tools, not with hands—but with His Word.

Let’s Go Back to the Beginning

Genesis 1:1–3:

“In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth… Then God said, ‘Let there be light,’ and there was light.”

Now, let’s connect this with John chapter 1:

“In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God… All things came into being through Him.”

John is taking us back to Genesis.

“Then God said” — that is His Word.

In creation, we see:

  • The Father
  • The Word (the Son)
  • The Spirit of God

All present at the very beginning.

The Word Made Flesh

John 1:1 tells us:

“In the beginning was the Word.”

And who is the Word? Jesus Christ.

Verse 4 says:

“In Him was life, and that life was the light of men.”

Now think back to Genesis:

“Let there be light.”

Jesus is that Light.

The same Word that created the universe entered into it.

“He was in the world, and the world was made through Him.”

The Creator stepped into His creation.

What This Means for Us

After all of creation—after light, life, and everything else—God created mankind in His image.

That’s us.

We are made in His likeness, given purpose, responsibility, and authority over creation.

Every time I think about this, I am in awe.

In awe of the God who:

  • Spoke light into existence
  • Created the universe through His Word
  • Made us in His image

The Song Says It Well

“Let us make man in our image, in our likeness…”

In the beginning, God created man.
In His image, He created them.

In the beginning, God created man.
In His image, He created them.

He created all creatures—but man in His image.
