"Ye shall henceforth return no more that way."
- Deuteronomy 17:16
These words are part of the instructions to Israel by Moses. They had
been led out of Egypt by the strong arm and Moses who warns them they
shall never return again that way.
The past is past whether we like it or not. The past is always seen
more correctly when it is past than when it was present. There is
something alarming about this; no matter how much we regret that we
erred yesterday, there is nothing we can do today to undo it. We can
never return to . . .
"Ye shall henceforth return no more that way."
- Deuteronomy 17:16
These words are part of the instructions to Israel by Moses. They had been led out of Egypt by the strong arm and Moses who warns them they shall never return again that way.
The past is past whether we like it or not. The past is always seen more correctly when it is past than when it was present. There is something alarming about this; no matter how much we regret that we erred yesterday, there is nothing we can do today to undo it. We can never return to the way that lies behind, retrace our steps, and start over again.
Now we can tell where we missed opportunities of doing good in the service of God and of our fellow men. Now we can see that something was sinful which at the time seemed only smart. Now we feel bad about disobedience to Father and Mother. Now we wish that we had not spoken the profane word or permitted our anger to overpower us. But that cannot change the past.
Is there really nothing at all that can be done about it? Indeed there is.
Christian friends, We must seek forgiveness through Jesus Christ for all the sins of the past. Only in this way can the guilt of the past be removed. Having learned this lesson, let us resolve, with God's grace, to dedicate each day to the doing of His will. Let us so live today that we may never regret tomorrow what we did yesterday.
Yesterday He helped me,
Today I'll praise His name.
Because I know tomorrow,
He'll help me just the same.
THOUGHT FOR THE DAY - Life is a one way street. Live in the consciousness that you shall not pass this way again.
