SECOND SUNDAY AFTER EPIPHANY

"This is the day the LORD hath made, let us rejoice and be glad in it."

Isaiah 62:1-5
1 Cor. 12:1-11
John 2:1-11
Psalm 36

The gospel today reveals Jesus as the Creator who changes things by His word. Mary said to the servants, "Whatsoever He saith unto you, do it." Jesus issued two commands. First, "Fill the water-pots with water," and then, "Draw out now, and bear unto the governor of the feast." The result was a miracle of creation. Water was changed into wine.

The new creation begins in us when we repent of our disobedience and begin to obey God's Word. The instructions given to Mary echo down to us: "Whatsoever He saith unto you, do it." It is a simple command; yet we do not always follow it because the world, flesh and the devil call us to compromise and disobey. But God's Word calls us to obedience.

The miracle of Canna gives us insight into the process of change. The spiritual life, the life of prayer, is process of change but one frustration we encounter is that the process is slow. We would like the miracle of change in us to be instantaneous like what happened at Cana. Yet Jesus works in us more at the pace of normal wine making, changing us slowly over the course of years. There is a purpose to the slow pace. Jesus wants us to consent to His work in us by acts of the will. Every sacrifice made in response to God's Word expedites the miracle of change and moves us closer to the perfect image of Christ.

We are promised that the new creation will be completed in one great and final act on the Day of Resurrection. 1 Cor.15:52 says, "We shall all be changed, in a moment, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last Trumpet"

His love has no limit,
His grace has no measure,
His power has no boundary known unto men;
For out of His infinite Riches and Glory, He giveth, and giveth, and giveth again.

PRAY - Almighty and eternal God, Governor of all things in heaven and on earth, mercifully hear the prayers of Your people, and grant us Your peace in our days. Amen
